“Shivaji” Ganesan – The Legend

“Shivaji” Ganesan
is one of my favourite actors of all times. He has done versatile roles in his career and has received accolades for almost all of them. He had the greatest talent of slipping into any kind of role with ease. He also had an amazing sense of dialogue delivery, which was very evident right from his first movie. Recently, the Tamilnadu government unveiled his statue to honor his contribution to the film industry. The least I could do to honor such a legend is to dedicate a post to him and list out my favourite 10 movies from among the ones he acted in. Here they are:

10. Gauravam

9. Navarathiri

8. Vasantha Maligai

7. Thiruvilayadal

6. Parasakthi

5. Pasa Malar

4. Thillana Mohanambal

3. Devar Magan

2. Mudhal Mariyadhai

1. Karnan

Sesh,

You are right, though "Shivaji" Ganesan's greatest asset is his dialogue delivery, there are many instances where he has proved that he can bring out the best even without uttering a single word. And yes, the scene you mentioned from "Devar Magan" is a classic example of that. A true genius...what else can I say?

I guess most of us belong to the generation, where we grew up watching Kamal act and thus, I feel we will never be able to appreciate the genius of the man completely. Devar Magan and Mudhal Mariyadhai were those rare occasions where we got to see why he is so highly revered as an actor.

Filby,

I think "Shivaji" Ganesan & Kamal belong to 2 different genre. Though I appreciate Kamal's acting in a few movies, I was never a gr8 Kamal fan and hence for me, "Shivaji" Ganesan is any day my choice over him.

Hey Preethi,

I admire both Shivaji and Kamal for the two different but tremendously actors they have been throughout. I love most of Shivaji's movies. Good post! And, thank you for your comment on 'In Passing...' If you liked that, try the one I wrote just before it 'ESP'. I think you will like it too. :-)

Preethi...Though its almost impossible to come up with top 10 for an actor like Shivaji, you have done a good job....But I'm very much surprised to see Pudhiya Paravai not making the list...IMO it was the most classy role by the thespian...

Hi Amar,

It's gr8 to hear from you after a long time. And I completely agree with you. Its very difficult to come up with the top 10 for an actor like Shivaji, and I guess that's y I missed out "Pudhiya Paravai". That was indeed a wonderful movie. I just tried to come up with the ones that left a lasting impression in my memory.
